nafco environmental achievement

At NAFCO, we strive for environmental excellence by operating our business in a manner where we use resources wisely and protect the quality of the environment.

We, at Nafco, take pride in our manufacturing processes and how they affect the environment. We aggressively select suppliers to reduce fuel consumption and other transportation-related costs by using raw materials in close proximity to the plant in Florence, AL. In fact, some 65 percent of raw materials come from within 200 miles of our manufacturing facility.

Nafco developed a continuous improvement program, using lean manufacturing techniques. These techniques are used to identify and reduce waste, including use of energy–natural gas and electricity–water and raw materials.  Currently, we conduct studies to identify areas of opportunity. As we make appropriate changes, we monitor the effect on energy usage.

Indoor air quality is extremely important; therefore, all Nafco tiles and planks are FloorScore certified for indoor air quality, a standard sponsored by The Resilient Floor Covering Institute. Certified floors “meet recognized performance criteria for listed VOCs under the California Section 01350 program,” according to the RFCI. Furthermore “….the FloorScore seal means that you can ‘breathe easier’ because the floor is a low emitting building material as recognized by CHPS [the Collaborative for High Performance Schools],” notes RFCI.

We also recommend our own adhesives which are non-flammable and water-based as compared to solvent-based adhesives that adversely affect air quality when they evaporate.

The Nafco team works diligently to ensure almost all manufacturing scrap is recycled back into the product. We collect and trap fine dust and fine beveller shavings that are reintroduced into our formulations. Not only do we use our manufacturing scrap in our process, but we also have an ongoing program to research new sources of materials to use in our finished products. These materials come from both post industrial and post consumer waste.

For Nafco, using packaging materials that are safe for the environment is imperative. Our boxes are made of 40 percent recycled material and are recyclable. Also, our wooden pallets are made of reclaimed and re-used materials.

Our manufacturing facility identifies and controls the environmental impact of our activities, products and services. Nafco strives to improve its environmental performance continually. In order to do this, we are implementing a systematic approach to set environmental objectives and targets, to achieve these, and to demonstrate that they have been achieved. In doing so, we will obtain ISO14001 certification by January 2010.
